Aluminium and tinplate presently account for just over 15% of the total domestic packaging applications market. There are currently 15 manufacturers in the UK which, when combined with a rising level of imports from Europe and developing nations, produce around 800,000/tpa. Metal, like the other traditional favourite, glass, has ceded market share to rigid plastics and flexible film, which combined now contributes £3.2BN/pa towards total UK packaging sales. However, the director of the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA), believes things are going to change given the growing concern over environmental issues.
