Segmented melting (SEG-MELT) is a method of glass melting that recognises that batch requires a longer time and higher temperaturees to be converted to an acceptable glass quality in comparison to cullet. The system also recognises that cullet is now an important raw material used by many glassmakers worldwide. Batch typically requires 20h-24h to be converted to usable glass and cullet requires 10h-12h or much less for certain products. There are a number of significant benefits of this concept. One is how to achieve traditional output from essentially the same furnace footprint. In this example, the existing furnace is air/gas regenerative and the SEG-MELT is oxy-gas. This results in a level of NOx that is low enough to comply with regulatory requirements.
