Enormous advances have been made in glass melting technology over the past 40 years. One result is that typical energy consumptions are now extremely low, and in the case of one furnace in Germany highlighted in this article, the specific energy consumption is actually below the psychologically important value of 3GJ per tonne of glass melted. The drive to improve energy efficiency has been fuelled by several factors, but energy price rises and market pressures have played important roles.
