Mechanical Reliability Of Alkali Strontium Silicate Glass Panels For Cathode Ray Tubes

Alkali strontium silicate glasses are used for manufacturing the front panel of cathode ray tubes (CRT). The design and mechanical reliability of CRT panels, subjected to static flexural stresses due to vacuum loading, depend on the strength, aging and fatigue behaviour of surface flaws encountered in service. This paper presents the strength, ageing and fatigue data for panel glass with 150-J surface abrasion (representative of service flaws) and uses the Power law fatigue model for estimating the lifetime of cathode ray tubes. Good agreement is obtained with the static fatigue tests on full size CRTs.
