Analysis of silicate glass strength carried out by various authors has shown that its theoretical value is in the range 15-20 GPa. The real strength of rough glass for industrial and building applications is 0.2-10% of the theoretical limit. The maximum values belong to glass fibres, the minimum - to ground massive glasses. Strength investigations carried out of float-glass made in Russia have revealed causes of low level of sheet glass real strength and technological stages of manufacture where this strength drop happens. These industrial investigations confirm numerous laboratory experiments accomplished in various countries in glass strength dependence on its surface structure defects.
