Synthetic graphite has been fashioned into take-out inserts, push-out pads, transfer wheel paddles, and lehr stacker pads for more than a decade. However, the differences between various grades and types of graphite have not been discussed completely. Many industries are not fully equipped to make an informed decision regarding which grade or type of graphite is best suited for their particular application. Through changes in formulation, production, and post processing, properties such as oxidation resistance, strength, machinability, and thermal conductivity can be dramatically affected. A brief overview of the properties and characteristics of graphite is given.
