[Malta] Uphill Struggle To Implement Packaging Laws

Malta is still having "massive difficulties" in the implementation of the packaging & packaging waste directive, according to industry insiders. One expert said that the target dates of June/05 had come & gone with recovery & recycling figures remaining minuscule. "Companies remain oblivious of their producer responsibilities given that there is no enforcement from the authorities. The problem is that although they have powers, the will to enforce them is lacking." He said that the Authority in charge of recycling rates does not have figures for publication. The only figures in the public domain are in the May issue of "Industry Today", issued by the Federation of Industry, which said that "out of an estimated 16,250 tonnes of plastics packaging, only 102 tonnes were sent for recycling". The green dot scheme GreenPak is still waiting to get a licence, which doesn't help.
