According to Sun Bear Solar Sdn Bhd's CEO, Lee Holt Judd, the company will invest MYR 5.2BN in Malaysia to produce solar glass for the photovoltaic industry. Judd said that in phase one, initial investment of MYR 2.2BN would be utilized to produce float & pattern line mid-2010. "The plant will be built on 120-hectare site at Kota Kinabalu Ind Park & will create 1,200 jobs in Malaysia," she said, after jointly announcing the investment with Malaysian Ind Dev Authority DG, Datuk Jalilah Baba. She added the remaining MYR 3BN would be used under phase 2 to enlarge glass lines. "We expect production to start in the Q1 of 2012 & phase 2 construction would probably start in the next 6-9 months," she said. Judd said Malaysia was picked because of its commitment to solar panel manufacturing growth availability of high quality raw materials & would benefit small& medium industries.
