Thomas Edison constructed his first incandescent lamp in 1880 with a glass bulb made from handblown lead glass tubing. Within one short month of this development, Edison realised that bulb making was not one of the strengths of his research facility. This article gives a brief rundown of the evolution of the light bulb, starting with Corning Glass Works agreeing to supply Edison's Menlo Park laboratory with blown glass blanks at $5/gross to today's modern lighting devices.
