Over the last 25 years, the EU container glass industry has experienced a sharp increase in recycling. Today, over 50% of packaging glass is recycled in the EU, but there are still major differences in individual member states' recycling rates. At the doorstep of the next millennium, EU countries face the challenge to meet glass recycling targets implemented the the EC's directive on packaging and packaging waste (94/62/EC). This article explains the benefits of glass recycling, the do's and don'ts of waste glass disposal, and the impact of glass recycling on raw material suppliers. It also highlights the stark differences in glass recycling across Europe.
