Pilkington Group announced 15 Sept, during the Frankfurt International Motor Show, that it had carried out a significant expansion of its SPD business by acquiring a new license from Research Frontiers Inc. to offer SPD-Smart automotive products globally. Research Frontiers is the developer & licensor of patented VaryFast SPD-Smart light-control film technology. Pilkington obtained a license in 2004 to work with SPD technology to make laminated SPD-SmartGlass panels. Thanks to this new license, Pilkington can now offer SPD-Smart end-products such as sunroofs, glass roof panels, adaptive sunvisors incorporated into windscreens, side & rear windows. SPD-Smart products can be tuned to any level of light transmission immediately manually or automatically between clear & extremely dark - blocking more than 99.5% of incoming visible light. SPD-SmartGlass can also reduce vehicle interior heat build-up and thus cooling requirements thanks to its ability to block heat.
