Design differs depending on which part of the world it comes from. European designers still think in terms of function, whereas in the Middle East, Islamic design motifs have remained the same for centuries. In China, hundreds of design firms have sprung up in major cities, while American design is always more about consumer needs and wants than beauty or utility. Modern design, however, is dominated by one mood - irony - and the strong influence of new technologies.
