Britain's most violent pubs are to be given plastic pint glasses in a bid to cut down on drink-fuelled brawls. The new-style safety glasses are unbreakable, meaning they cannot be smashed and used as deadly weapons. They have been introduced by Coors Brewers, which produces top-selling Carling and Grolsch lagers. The move comes as Britain prepares for new licensing laws, which critics fear could cause a dramatic rise in alcohol-related crime. Senior police chiefs have welcomed the innovation, but have said that more must be done to tackle pub crime. A Coors spokesman said the company has made the plastic glasses available to more than 45,000 outlets which sell its brands. She said: "Local authorities now have the power to stop publicans serving drinks in glasses on a venue-by-venue basis if they feel there are risks of violence." The toughened plastic pint pots are reusable and cost roughly the same price as a traditional glass.
