Lack Of Investment Stifles Romanian Advance

Post-1990, the Romanian glass industry suffered a dramatic production decrease. The reasons for this reversal of fortunes included the low technical level and efficiency of certain manufacturing methods, plus reduced demand in the local market for selected products. As a result, between 1990 and 1993, several production units were either closed or put under care and maintenance. Outdated manufacturing technology, making heavy products at low productivity levels was paritally responsible. After 1993 the situation improved and continued to do so in 1995. This paper reviews the current situation and gives tables of the industry's output, sector by sector.
