Laboratory Melting Of Glasses To Commercial Standards Of Homogeneity

Batches to yield 410g of glass were melted in an electrically heated laboratory furnace and stirred to produce glass of homogeneity similar to that given by a good container furnace. Several of the possible variables in melting conditions were investigated to find their effect on the homogeneity of glass produced by both a simple model batch and an actual commercial container glass batch. The results demonstrated that investigations intended to give useful information about full scale melting should use the actual batch concerned and not rely on simplfied model glass or batch compositions.
