Optical properties of Ln3+ ions doped in different crystalline and glass host matrices are of current interest a they exhibit lasting transitions which are influenced by the host material. Glasses as doping matrices have many advantages. A close study of the optical spectra of Ln3+ ions over the entire series looking for differences and similarities between the crystalline and glass hosts should be of value. Two aspects, one pertaining to the variation in the Judd-Ofelt parameters as we look at the rare-earth series and the other pertaining to the influence of the host matrices on the hypersensitive transitions, have been investigated in detail in crystalline matrices unlike in glass systems.
