[Japan] Green Plastic For Food Containers And Packaging, Its Developments And International Standardisation (In Japanese)

Commercialisation of GreenPla (biodegradable plastics) as a food packaging material has been delayed in Japan, because of the concerns over its heat resistance, moisture barrier, safety and cost effectiveness. Establishment of a GreenPla specific recycling system is also anticipated to utilise its biodegradability. International standard test methods on biodegradable plastics are currently under development. Japan is traditionally weak on the compost making facilities and supporting systems, hence compostability tests are lacking in the Japanese regulations. However, Japan has its unique environmental safety tests.
