The department of structural engineering at the University of Pisa in central Italy has patented the first glass beam. The three-meter long prototype was created by the research group led by Professor Maurizio Froli and Dr. Leonardo Lani. The inclusion of metal components makes it resistant to tensile stresses and the elegance of the beam means it is ideally suited to use in buildings such as museums, art galleries and churches.
