An Italian study group within the Italian CNR (Centro Nazionale delle Richerche, National Research Council) is writing "Recommendations for the Design, Construction & Control of Buildings with Structural Glass Elements." According to Gianni Royer-Carfagni & Mirko Silvestri, this document fills a gap in the standardisation of non-traditional materials for structural use. The Italian Structural Standards (DM 14/01/08: Norme Techniche sulle Construzioni), which became compulsory mid-2009, firmly established "point 4.6" that "innovative" building materials such as glass, can be used for structural purpose if, and only if, each specific plan is approved by the Italian Central Technical Service under the mandatory advice of the Superior Council of Public Works. This requires a formidable effort in terms of time and cost, even for routine works. Therefore, to fill the gap in the field of regulations, the Italian National Research Council recently formed a study group to prepare structural recommendations for the design, construction and control of buildings with structural glass elements. This study group is composed of major experts in the field involved in research, design and construction.
