After deep analysis of the production levels of each sector of the Italian glass industry in 1998, and of their distribution in Italy, this paper examines the various types of pollutants present in furnace wastes and the thermodynamic conditions that cause their formation. It then examines, in great detail, the advantages and disadvantages of the Best Available Techniques and analyses their influence on production costs and makes it evident that the solutions that are able to give only a marginal benefit to emission levels have a very negative influence on glass production costs.
