The literature is reviewed in considerable detail. The variation methods for producing foam glass are classified in the following categories: (1) by causing evolution of dissolved gases produced in the glassforming reactions, (2) by the introduction of gases or vapours by stirring, beating, or the use of pressure, (3) by adding to the batch or stirring into the melt organic or inorganic substances or mixtures which undergo thermal breakdown to produce gases, and (4) by the use of intimate mixture of powdered glass and the gas producing material, which may be in the form of a frit or preformed mass.
