Investigation Into The Dissolution Mechanisms Of Aluminous Stones In Container Glass (In Italian)

Aluminous stones are a common defect in container glass. The stones analysed in this work are due to the use of involuntarily contaminated batches containing bauxite grains, ceramic grains, introduced by recycled cullet, or grains coming from refractories & mortars used in repairs. The samples were analysed by SEM & EDS-X ray micro-analysis to determine microstructural characteristics & the chemical composition of the different phases. In order to understand reactions occurring between the aluminous stones, the molten glass, & the diffusion mechanisms governing the dissolution process, laboratory corrosion tests were carried out on ceramic & refractory materials in contact with a crystal glass. The microtextural & microanalytical data obtained allowed a correlation to be established between the characteristics of the examined stones.
