Interactions Between Dense Alumina-Silica Ceramics And Molten Aluminium

The structural stability of dense alumina-silica tubes dipped in molten aluminium was studied in stationary conditions and in stirred melts. Static tests were carried out in air and under protective atmopshere whereas dynamic tests were performed only under protective atmosphere. The temperature of the melt was 925 deg C and the maximum velocity of tubes was 7.5cm/s. Penetration rates, reaction products and microstructural modifications were examined as a function of dipping time and velocity of tubes in the melt.
