Interaction Of Glass Surfaces With Environment And Strength Variation Using Weibull Analysis

In this work, the effects on the strength of typical industrial glasses (pyrex and soda-lime-silica rods), after extended exposure at a constant temperature, in acidic, neutral and alkaline environments, are investigated. SEM is used for the examination of the surfaces of samples, with the intention of explicating the interaction of the surfaces with environment. In addition, mechanical three-point bending tests are performed for the glass rods, in order to calculate their strength, followed by Weibull analysis, in an attempt to analyse the strength variation of glasses, for all conditions tested.
