Influences Of Chitosan Addition To Morphology And Particle Size Of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconia (Ysz) Nanoparticle For Dental Bridge Application

Nanoparticle Yttrium Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) was obtained by a sol-gel method. ZrCl4 and Y(NO3)3. 6H2O were used as precursors. Chitosan was used as an organic plolymer gelling agent. Chitosan has the advantages of being non-toxic, low cost, biodegradable, and compatible for biomaterials, application. Variation of precursor concentrations will affect particle size. The lower precursor concentration gives a smaller particle size or zirconia. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to characterized the crystal structure of zirconia. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to measure the particle size, the homogeneity and the morphology of particles. When chitosan was added to the precursor, the particle size obtained is 56-64 nm. In contrast, without the addition of chitosan, the particle size is 63078 nm, Both samples used 0.1 M ZrCl4 as a precursor. The result showed that the addition of chitosan would affect the particle size of zirconia.
