Influence Of Field Strength Parameters On The Optical Spectra Of Iron-Containing Silicate Glasses

Shifts of the maximum absorption of Fe(II) around 1000nm in synthetic magmatic and soda-silica glasses are correlated to the silica content and to Dietzel's cation field strength. On the microscopic scale, optical band shifts turn out to be highly dependant on the medium range order around Fe(II) in these glasses. On the macroscopic scale the position of this absorption band is related to the overall composition of the melts.
