An Industry Perspective Of Factors That Affect Fibre Glass Strength

Glass fibres offer an inexpensive material for producing high-strength, low-weight plastic parts. With 4-6% growth rate, the glass fibre industry is robust, as new uses are found in applications previously held by other materials, such as aluminium and steel. In terms of end-use applications, composite strength is the property of focus for the customer. Within PPG Industries Inc, product evaluation consists of testing the composite part by using the resin system used by the customer, as well as the type of composite making process (spray up, SMC, injection moulding, pultrusion). This article tables the compositions and properties of commercial glass fibres.
