The importance of Europe, Japan and the USA as centres of the world's glass industry is rapidly being challenged by the Asean countries, India, South American countries and others. Glass, together with a modern steel industry, represents an important step forward in any country's economy. While glass plants can be stragegically built in any location, the importance of the raw materials required are often at the bottom of the list when plans are formulated. Modern glass manufacturing techniques require raw materials of the highest quality to ensure that the final product measures up to the international standards demanded by the user.
