Fuelled by growth in sectors such as real estate, infrastructure, retail, auto and food and beverages, India's glass industry will acquire a market size worth Rs 340BN by 2014 (from Rs 225BN presently), according to a recent study. "Indian glass market is estimated to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 15% over the next 3 years. Glass consumption growth is expected in construction (10-12%); auto (20%); consumer goods (15-20%) and pharmaceutical (15-18%)" said an industry observer. The primary sectors of the glass industry in India empoly some three million people directly, providing up to five million jobs indirectly. The highest share in the number of factories of the glass industry in India is Uttar Pradesh, with a share of 36.9%, followed by Gujarat with 15%; Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu at 5.6% and Karnataka with 4%. per capita glass usage in India is 1.2kg compared with 8-9kg in developed countries, and 30-35kg in the US, the study found.
