The technique of producing glass by floating it on hot tin was first made public 40 years ago by Pilkington. Unitl its invention in the 50s the only production line style method of making glass was the plate glass process. Many people still refer to plate glass, even in specifications, but this method of manufacture more or less died out years ago and is now little more than a historic curiosity.
