Increasing Glass Recycling With Local Authorities

Valpak has linked up with the London Borough Council of Camden & Westminster City Council to launch a new glass kerbside collection service from residential and business areas in the boroughs. Glass collected will support a new recycling process in which the glass is mixed with limestone and bitumen to create "glasphalt." Glasphalt can then be used as a base course below the road surface. Excess green glass which currently represents around 50% of the glass collected can be reused rather than going to landfill sites. Valpak would like to see total glass recovery levels increase by 1m tonnes in the next five years to make UK recovery levels comparable with those of the other EU countries. The scheme is extremely cost effective too because the glass doesn't have to be sorted by colour in order to be ground and blended for use in road surfaces.
