Molten glass is advanced along a molten metal bath with edges of the glass ribbon confined. The width of the ribbon is then allowed to increase in an unconfined region under acceleration to the high speed of discharge and the ribbon is attenuated to the required thickness. The process can be operated to produce 6mm glass as 2.5m width with a weekly output of 3250 tonnes and a ribbon discharge speed of about 480m/h.
