A fender which halts the flow of an advancing layer of molten glass in the float process is a hollow channel of a material not wetted by molten glass. A flat face which engages the glass extends downwards into a foot which is immersed in the molten metal of the bath. Fluid to cool the face is passed through a groove in the foot near the face.
