In float glass tank a protective atmosphere containing hydrogen is supplied to the headspace defined by the roof over the bath. An outlet from the tank structure defines and elongated path communicating directly with the headspace, and a pump is connected to the outer end of this path for withdrawing gases from the headspace at a controlled rate.
