Improved Packaging Inspection Through Ultrasound

Scientists at the University of Illinois are using the ability of ultrasound to spot packaging defects which human visual inspection cannot. The approach uses a recently developed pulse-echo acoustic technique to identify defects in the packaging. The innovation has the potential to reduce errors inherent with visual inspection, maintain production line speeds and could be used to inspect any packaging material, except paper. (abstract only)
