Hydrogen Surface Etching Of Molten Silica

Melting experiments with quartz sand were carried out under hydrogen atmospheres at temperatures between 1700 and 1850 degrees C. Fine scale pitted morphologies depending on the melting temperature were noted at the melt surface.
