How Does Chemical Composition Control Glass Properties?

The properties of glasses depend mostly on their chemical composition; some properties, however, are partly dependent on the melting history of the glass. In describing the role of the chemical composition two approaches are used: The first is a pure empirical correlation between the oxide composition and the properties; the other is to connect the properties with a more fundamental understanding of the molecular structure within the glass.
