How To Create Toughening Stresses

Normal annealed glass is a brittle material. It can take a high compressive load but little tensile load, because the glass always has microcracks in the surface. This paper describes how those microcracks affect glass properties and how the glass can be processed to make it safer. It also compares toughened glass with heat-strengthened glass.
