How Can Plastic Closures Featured With Barrier & Oxygen Scavenger Enhance Sensory Quality And Shelf Life Of Beer In A Plastic Bottle?

The Bericap Technologies "Tapsid BO2S" screw cap for plastic bottles consists of a polypropylene outer shell (incorporating a patented tamper evident sealing arrangement to secure it to the bottle neck) with a lining disc composed of up to 8 layers of different materials (including ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) to act as a physical gas barrier as well as a combination of polyolefin and various oxygen scavenging compounds serving to trap any oxygen which might otherwise enter despite the EVOH barrier, as well as to remove the oxygen already in the headspace when the bottle is capped). The results of trials carried out by the Technical University of Munich at Weihenstephan, as well as in Bericap's own laboratories, which demonstrate the improvement in the stability of PET bottled beer when using the closures described, are presented.
