The application of oxy-fuel firing on an industrial scale has raised problems of accelerated refractory wear in many of the first generation of furnaces. Whether or not the problem is solvable in the future by improved material selection or better operating procedures, the operators of the first oxy-fuel furnaces still have to repair the damaged refractories if they are to get a satisfactory return on their capital investment. In this article the advantages of regular and early repair work are discussed.
