Basically, special glasses can be divided into five families: borosilicate glasses; opal glasses; potassium glasses; glass ceramics; and, glasses for reinforcing fibres. The high quality of products manufactured using these types of glass is such that the behaviour of the refractories they are in contact with is extremely important. In fact, the maximum level of glass defects which can be accepted dictate the choice of refractory products used in the furnaces. This article considers possible solutions to these problems and describes the principle defects found in special glasses.
