Glass is mostly a transparent material; not only at low temperatures but also in the melting temperature zone. This glass property enables continual observation, recording and evaluation of phenomena and processes taking part in a glass melt. The high-temperature observation procedures useful in chemical engineering research can be introduced into the examination of the glass melting process. The most frequent applications are batch melting/fining studies, refractory testing on blistering and observation of the temperature dependence of bubble behaviour.
