Man-made vitreous fibres (MMVF) are classified within the EU as a carcinogenic category 3 (possibly carcinogenic), but criteria exist to exonerate fibers from this classification. The HT stone wool fibre type is a MMVF that fulfils EU regulatory requirements for exoneration from classification as a carcinogen based on in vivo testing. The chemical composition of the fibres and the results of the in vivo and in vitro studies that defend the chemical compositional range for a CAS registry number for these are presented and discussed.
