Further reduction in refractory costs requires the extension of furnace lives. This, in turn leads to demands for the introduction of more corrosion and alkali resistant refractories whose performance have been thoroughly assessed by adopting simulative testing techniques that correlate closely with in-service conditions. Some of the new refractory materials currently generating interest are highlighted along with the authors views for the future in the glass industry.
