Glass: A Truly Sustainable Packaging Material

Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In the realm of packaging, a sustainable material should be economically viable, environmentally sound, and socially responsible. A commonly used definition for sustainable packaging is: "Sustainable packaging ads economic and social value to a product; minimises the use of materials and energy; is recyclable or "compostable;" and is non-toxic to humans and ecosystems." With more and more reports continuing to surface regarding health concerns with alternative packaging materials (see: keepitorganic.org for more information) and the ongoing concerns about sustainability and the environment, glass remains the leader in the packaging industry.
