Glass Resists Kalashnikov Bullets

This brief article describes how ammunition from an AK47 Kalashnikov rifle failed to penetrate Pilkington's newly developed bullet proof glass. The 11ply 44mm glass is made up of six layers of glass and five interlayers of vinyl of varying thickness. On contact with the bullet, the glass dissipates the initial shockwave of impact and ensures that no fragments penetrate the layers. The product has been developed, tested and improved to exact specifications by Pilkington Laminated at Leeds. It will be shipped overseas to protect military vehicles and the security forces in the Middle East and Africa, where the AK47 is the most common weapon used. (whole article)
