Some 412,000 metric tonnes of glass bottles are recycled a year in the Netherlands, according to figures from the Dutch Economy Ministry published on 18 April 2005. According to the ministry, 81% of the used glass bottles in the Netherlands end up in glass bins for recycling annually. A Dutch citizen delivers an annual average of 50 glass bottles, weighing 21 Kg, for recycling. Single-person households are among the most active collectors of glass bottles, according to the ministry's data. The Netherlands ranks fifth in terms of glass recycling volume in Europe. In first place is Switzerland, where 96% of glass bottles are recycled annually.
