Glass Pigments Used In Renaissance And Baroque Painting As Described In Published And Unpublished Muranese Recipe Books (In Italian)

An unpublished recipe book of the 17th century reports some prescriptions for the preparation of yellow and azure pigments, used also in painting, which are compared in this paper with those described in other manuscripts of the 16th and 17th centures. Two recipes are examined concerning a yellow pigment obtained not only with lead and tin oxides, like in the famous "giallolino", but also including two new ingredients, antimony and zinc. This pigment produced by the glassmakers in Murano, was empoyed in painting in the 17th century and, presumably, also before.
