The European Parliament must consider the needs of industries before setting legally binding targets on industrial emissions. This is the message from FEVE, following fears that Parliament may impose an EU safety net - or emission limit value (ELV), as part of the IPPC directive. The concern is that this safety net, if imposed, would give industry little to no flexibility in adjusting its emissions. The issue is that important decisions such as deciding emissions targets, should boil down to the recommendations of experts and engineers, who understand the complexities of industry, and the extent to which exemptions must be permitted due to unforseen or extraordinary circumstances. According to FEVE, these limits should not fall on the hands of political leaders.
