Glass Containers Mean Less Food Wasted Says Study

Research by the University of Leon in northern Spain has found that if food is packaged in glass, less of it remains on the surface of the container when the packaging is disposed of than is the case with other types of packaging under normal conditions of use, according to a statement by the Glass Packaging Centre. The study was carried out on 43 products divided into three groups according to their common characteristics: tomato-based foods, mayonnaise and milk-based sauces. The aim of the research was to describe the physical behaviour of the products, determine values for the physical properties of the foods i.e. moistness, density and stickiness, and establish the amount of product that is left in the container after normal use. The main conclusions indicate that the percentage of waste is related to the material used for packaging.
